VC Deal Flow Signal Report: Startup Funding Velocity Patterns 2026

Cross-sector analysis of 538 startup engineering organizations by GitDealFlow · Data curated from public sources · Q2 2026

Key Findings

28 Breakout engineering signals detected in AI/ML sector in Q2 2026 — the highest of any sector
6.2 Median weeks from engineering velocity break-out to announced fundraise across all sectors
312 Average weekly commits per tracked AI/ML startup — more than 3× the average across all sectors
4.2 Median engineering team size across tracked startups; gaming and biotech have larger teams (5.3, 4.8)

Introduction

This report analyzes public engineering activity data across 538 venture-backed startups in 15 sectors to identify patterns in funding velocity. GitDealFlow tracks commit velocity, contributor growth, and repository expansion across startup GitHub organizations to surface breakout engineering teams 3–6 weeks before fundraise announcements.

The data reveals clear sector-level differences: AI/ML and defense startups move fastest from signal to fundraise, while biotech and proptech show the longest lag times — reflecting the different capital requirements and development cycles across industries.

Methodology

GitDealFlow monitors public GitHub activity for ~538 venture-backed startups across 15 sectors. For each tracked organization, we measure weekly commit velocity, active contributor count, and repository growth. A "breakout signal" is counted when a startup's commit velocity exceeds its 4-week rolling average by more than 2 standard deviations.

Data provenance: All data in this report is curated from public sources including GitHub public repositories, SEC filings, and publicly announced fundraises. The commit data is derived from public GitHub activity, which captures only a portion of total engineering output (private repos, GitLab-hosted projects, and offline development are not included). Fundraise timing is based on public announcement dates, which may lag the actual close by days or weeks.

This is not proprietary survey data. Figures represent observed patterns in publicly visible engineering activity and should be interpreted as directional indicators, not precise measurements.
