Why Engineering Velocity Matters
Your startup's engineering velocity is the single strongest leading indicator of product-market fit that investors can observe before you raise capital. Unlike revenue — which is often backdated or non-existent at seed stage — GitHub activity is real-time, transparent, and predictive.
Startups in the top quartile of engineering velocity are 3.2x more likely to raise a round within 60 days. VCs use velocity data to filter deal flow, identify breakout teams, and time their outreach. Understanding your velocity score — and how it compares to peers — gives you two advantages: you can fix weaknesses before they affect fundraising, and you can signal readiness when your metrics are strong.
GitDealFlow tracks 356 venture-backed startups across 15 sectors. Every startup's commit velocity, contributor growth, repository creation, and deploy cadence are measured on a rolling 14-day window. Your data may already be in the dataset.
Tools for Founders
Free tools to check, benchmark, and showcase your engineering velocity.
Benchmark Your Team
Step 1: Check your velocity
Go to the Velocity Checker and enter your GitHub organization name. You'll get your current velocity score, 14-day change, and breakdown by commit frequency, contributor growth, and repo creation.
Step 2: Compare with peers
Use the Benchmark tool to see how your velocity stacks up against other startups in your sector and funding stage. The benchmark shows percentile rankings so you know exactly where you stand.
Step 3: Track over time
Your velocity data updates every 24 hours. Revisit the Velocity Checker weekly to track trends. Consistent acceleration — even small gains — is the signal investors look for. Subscribe to the weekly digest to see how your sector is moving overall.
How to Get Featured
Startups appear in the GitDealFlow dataset automatically when their public GitHub activity meets our inclusion thresholds. Here's how to ensure your startup is visible to the investors monitoring our signals:
- 1. Keep your GitHub org public. Private or restricted orgs can't be measured. Make sure your engineering is visible.
- 2. Maintain 3+ public repos. Our minimum threshold is 3 public repositories with recent activity.
- 3. Engage 2+ contributors. Solo founders should onboard at least one additional contributor to register.
- 4. Sustain velocity for 14+ days. A one-week spike won't trigger our algorithms — sustained acceleration does.
What Founders Say
"I checked our velocity score before our Series A meeting. It showed we were in the top 15% of enterprise SaaS startups. I put that slide in our deck. The lead investor mentioned it in the first meeting."
"We noticed a velocity drop and found our onboarding pipeline for new engineers was bottlenecked. Fixed it. Three weeks later our velocity was up 200% and we got featured in the weekly digest. Two inbound investor emails."
Frequently Asked Questions
How is engineering velocity calculated? ▼
Engineering velocity is a composite metric based on commit frequency, contributor growth, repository creation rate, and deploy cadence over a rolling 14-day window. Each factor is normalized and weighted to produce a single velocity score that can be compared across startups regardless of team size or programming language.
Is my startup's data automatically tracked? ▼
GitDealFlow tracks public GitHub organizations that have at least 3 public repositories and 2 contributors. If your startup's GitHub org is public and meets these thresholds, it's likely already in the dataset. You can check at gitdealflow.com/check-velocity by entering your GitHub org name.
Can I see which investors are tracking my startup? ▼
GitDealFlow does not reveal individual user activity or identify who is viewing your startup's profile. However, the Scout Score tool can give you insight into which investors have a pattern of discovering startups like yours early — helpful context for targeting your fundraising outreach.
How can I improve my startup's engineering velocity score? ▼
Focus on consistent commit activity across your team, grow your contributor base by onboarding new engineers, create new repositories as you expand your product surface, and maintain a steady deploy cadence. Sharp spikes in any of these metrics will surface your startup in the Trending This Week board, which is monitored by investors.
Do you offer badges for displaying velocity metrics on my site? ▼
Yes. GitDealFlow provides embeddable SVG badges that display your startup's velocity score, sector rank, and momentum indicator. These are available at gitdealflow.com/startup-badges and can be embedded on your landing page, docs site, or README. They refresh automatically as your engineering activity evolves.
