How It Works

Engineering velocity correlates with fundraising timing. Here's our prediction model:

Signal Inputs → Prediction Model

Commit velocity Contributor growth Repo expansion Signal type

Our model processes four signal dimensions to estimate the fundraise window. Each dimension is weighted by its historical correlation with announced rounds in our dataset of 4,200+ startups.

Example Predictions

Here are three startups showing strong engineering acceleration signals right now:

Startup Sector Velocity Trend Lead Time Window Predicted Milestone Signal Type
tuva-health Healthcare +999% 21–28 days Series A Infrastructure buildout
wevm Web3 +999% 28–35 days Seed Deploy frequency spike
foxglove Robotics +312% 35–47 days Series B Engineering hiring burst

Methodology

Commit Velocity

Measures the rate of change in commit frequency over a 14-day rolling window. A sudden 3× or greater increase signals that the engineering team has been staffed up or reprioritized — typically a precursor to fundraising.

Contributor Growth

Tracks the number of unique contributors committing to the organization's repos. Sustained contributor growth over 4+ weeks correlates strongly with pre-fundraise team expansion.

Repository Expansion

New public repositories being created and actively developed. New repos suggest product expansion, which often accompanies or precedes a capital raise.

Signal Type Classification

We classify each acceleration into one of four archetypes: deploy frequency spike (tooling/process), engineering hiring burst (headcount), framework migration (technical debt cleanup), or infrastructure buildout (scaling). Each has a different lead-time profile.

For VCs

Use the Startup Funding Predictor to build a forward-looking deal pipeline. Instead of reacting to fundraise announcements, spot startups that are accelerating their engineering output and reach out during the 21–47 day lead window — before the competitive process begins.

Pair this with the Velocity Index for sector-level trend analysis, or use our Scout Score tool to identify partner VCs already in a startup's orbit.

For Founders

Founders can use the predictor to understand how investors see you — your engineering velocity is a public signal that VCs are already watching. A rising velocity score means you're building fundraising momentum even before you start the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does engineering velocity predict fundraising timing?

GitDealFlow research shows a 21–47 day lead window between detectable engineering acceleration (commit velocity spikes, contributor growth, repo expansion) and public fundraise announcements. Startups that suddenly accelerate their engineering output are typically preparing for a raise — hiring engineers, building new features, and scaling infrastructure ahead of investor demos.

What signals does the funding predictor use?

The predictor analyzes four signal types: commit velocity trend (how fast commits are growing), contributor growth rate (team expansion), repository expansion (new products/projects), and signal type classification (deploy frequency spike, engineering hiring burst, framework migration, or infrastructure buildout). Learn more about deal flow signals.

How accurate is the funding prediction?

Our model has been validated against historical fundraise announcements in our dataset. The 21–47 day lead window reflects observed patterns across 4,200+ tracked startups. Accuracy varies by sector and company maturity — pre-seed and seed-stage startups show the strongest correlation between velocity changes and fundraising timing.

Can founders use this to time their fundraise?

Absolutely. Founders can check their startup's velocity signals on GitDealFlow's Velocity Checker to understand how their engineering activity compares to startups that raised recently. A rising velocity trend over 2–4 weeks suggests strong fundraising positioning. We recommend maintaining or increasing velocity for at least 3 weeks before starting the fundraise process.

Is the funding predictor free?

Yes. The Startup Funding Predictor is completely free. Sign up for the weekly Signal Digest to get 5 trending startups delivered every Sunday, or subscribe to premium for full API access, historical data, and custom alerts.
