Free, open datasets and research reports. All content under CC BY 4.0.

GitDealFlow's research program turns public GitHub activity into a structured, reproducible view of startup momentum. Everything here is derived from public data, published with an open methodology, and released under a CC BY 4.0 license, you can download the datasets, audit the method, and build your own analysis on top. The target audience is investors, angels, scouts, seed funds, and family offices, who want evidence instead of anecdotes when they decide which startups to approach.

VC Deal Flow Signal Report: Startup Funding Velocity Patterns 2026

Cross-sector analysis of 350+ startup engineering organizations across 15 sectors, measuring commit velocity, team size, breakout signals, and time from engineering spike to fundraise announcement. AI/ML leads with 28 breakout signals in Q2 2026; median time from signal to fundraise is 6.2 weeks.

"Dear Professor", Our Dataset Paper Is Now Predatory-Journal Bait

Two "journals" invited the SSRN preprint for publication on the same day, one covering nuclear energy, one addressing "Dr. The Data Nerd". Both emails reproduced verbatim with the tells annotated, plus a red-flag checklist for spotting predatory journal invitations.

The method, in short

GitDealFlow tracks three signals per company from public GitHub activity: commit velocity (how much the team ships), contributor growth (how fast the team is adding people who actually commit), and repository expansion (new projects and surface area). When these accelerate together, the team is typically gearing up, and in the research panel of 219 startup-period observations across 55 startups, that acceleration led the public round announcement by 21-47 days. The full method, including the open dataset, is published on SSRN under CC BY 4.0.

How to use this data

What's coming

The dataset refreshes weekly and the research program publishes new reports as panels grow: sector-specific deep dives, benchmark tables like the engineering momentum benchmarks, and follow-on analysis of the fundraise lead-time findings. Everything remains free and open, the data is the product, and the product is public.

Why This Page Exists

GitDealFlow is a public deal flow signal dataset: 350+ startup GitHub organizations across 15 sectors, refreshed weekly, with breakout teams surfacing 21 to 47 days before their round is announced. This page makes one part of that system legible: what it measures, how it is computed, and how to use it in a live sourcing workflow. The method is published end to end and falsifiable by design, with the working paper on SSRN and the dataset downloadable under CC BY 4.0.
